For thousands of years meanings have been attached to flowers by many different cultures, with some of those meanings still being considered relevant today. Though the most important meaning is the thought behind each floral gift, flowers selected for their traditional symbolism and historical significance can speak to the recipient in a special way. In anniversary flowers, this tradition is taken even further by assigning particular flowers to each year of marriage. Though flower meanings vary from culture to culture and source to source, here are a few favorite flower choices for anniversaries to help you express your love throughout the years.

The Victorians used bouquets of flowers to communicate sentiments that they would never otherwise be able to express. Lovers could declare their fidelity, ask if their affection was returned, or even show an inconstant mate their sadness by choosing appropriate flowers. Whole books were published devoted to this coded “language of flowers.”

Picking Meaningful Flowers for Your Garden

If you have a Victorian house and you are looking for gardening ideas, you might consider including some plants with meanings. The Victorians assigned meanings to hundreds of plants. Sometimes, the meanings were troublingly contradictory. For example, lavender might mean either distrust or loyalty. The recipient of a bouquet of lavender was left to puzzle out whether his lover was expressing her loyalty or questioning his own loyalty.

Here are some meanings of common plants, taken from an 1882 article:

* Aloe: Grief
* Bachelor’s Buttons: Celibacy
* Basil: Hatred
* Butterfly Weed: Let me go
* Flowering Almond: Hope
* Lily of the Valley: Return of happiness
* Mint: Virtue
* Pine: Pity
* Purple Lilac: First emotions of love
* Rose: Love
* Sweet Pea: Delicate pleasures
* Tulip: Fame
* Zinnia: Thoughts of absent friends

Using the Language

The Victorians often combined several different flowers in bouquets to convey more complicated sentiments. By sending a bouquet of sweet peas and lilacs, they could tell someone that they were feeling the delicate pleasure of new love.

Today, you can use flowers from your garden in the same way the Victorians did, by sharing a bouquet that reveals your feelings. Because we are no longer familiar with the Victorians’ code, you might need to include an explanatory note with the bouquet. Another option is to create plantings of two or three types of flowers that create a message right in your garden. If you are feeling especially contrary, send a mixed message by combining roses with basil.

Everyday across the world there are thousands of flower arrangements gifted. For numerous occasions flowers are a wonderful and thoughtful gift. Anniversaries, birthdays, weddings, graduations, congratulations, and to give thanks are just a few reasons to give the gift of flowers. With all the flowers that are given on a daily basis, few individuals actually know the symbolic meaning of each flower. Knowing the meaning behind a flower can amplify the significance of the present greatly.

It is important to educate yourself on the symbolic meaning of the flowers that you give because it showcases the fact that the flowers were purchased with meaning and care. For example if a bouquet of lavender blossoms are given to a graduate, it would represent admiration and having their wishes come true.

The symbolic meaning of flowers dates back to the Victorian period. Certain flowers had specific meanings because the flower selection was very limited and people used more symbols and gestures to communicate than words. Some examples of flowers and their meanings are as follows: Azalea- abundance, Daffodil-chivalry, Daisy- innocence, Gardenia- joy, Iris- inspiration, Jasmine- grace and elegance, Lilac- first love, Magnolia- dignity, Orchid-delicate beauty, Pansy- loving thoughts, Violet- faithfulness, Peony- healing, Sunflower- adoration and Sweetpea-shyness.

Colors for different flowers can also have their own meaning. Roses are an example of this. Pink can mean friendship while red means passion or love. White roses stand for purity while yellow for zealous. Tulips also have multiple meanings, pink stands for caring and purple for royalty. Red, like roses, is a declaration of love, while yellow means hopelessly in love. White however means forgiveness. Carnations and Chrysanthemums also are said to have meaning behind their various colors.

Whether needing to send a message for a true love or a thank you gift, there are appropriate choices available in a variety of fresh flowers. A florist is sure to know an appropriate flower to match any emotion. Flowers can speak volumes about the sender’s feelings. Those who make an effort to understand the meanings behind individual flowers and their colors will certainly be able to give a thoughtful bouquet to those they care for.

Article by John Elton

Why are flowers colorful?

Since flowers can’t move, they need to be able to attract pollinators or be built so that wind is able to pollinate them. Flowers attract pollinators like bees, butterflies, insects, and birds with sweet nectar, bright colors, and shapes and structures. Some flowers open at special times to attract pollinators such as night blooming plants that are pollinated by bats.

Pollen from the male plant is removed from the anthers (male parts) to the stigmas (female parts), by means such as bees, for example, rummaging around in the flower. The bee is covered in pollen from one plant, and when it flies to another plant of the same species, the pollen is rubbed off on the stigma and so pollination occurs!

What Are Annual Flowers?

Annual flowers or annual plants are plants that complete their growing cycle (grows from seed, flowers and produces seed) in the course of a single growing season. In other words, annual flowers pack a lot of living into a short span of time and many annual flowers continue blooming all season long.

We carry a huge selection of annual flowers and depending on the time of year our stock varies. Please stop in and visit our greenhouse to see all of our current annual flowers.

Which flowers are best?

The color is important, as trends come and go. White flowers such as lilies or roses seem to never go out of style. But, you might check with the florist first, as they usually know which flowers are in style for funerals. A second way to ensure that you’re sending the appropriate colors is to contact the funeral home. Sometimes a themed funeral has been planned, and the family may have requested a certain color.

How big should you go? This question can be answered by your budget, but it also is answered by your connection with the bereaved family. If you’re a friend to the deceased and you shared an office space, then send a small arrangement. If you’re a distant relative, be careful. You don’t want to send an arrangement that’s larger or more elaborate than anything ordered by the immediate family or smaller than one sent by a friend. Although this advice may sound ludicrous, many families still follow convention of hierarchy – even with funeral flowers. Check with a florist in the town where the funeral is held – that florist may have answers for your questions.

Are there male and female flowers?

Yes, there are. The ones that are one sex are called monoecious and the flowers that are both sexes are called dioecious. Sometimes the two sexes are found on the same plant (like corn) and sometimes the entire plant is one sex (like ginko).

How do you preserve flowers?

The best way I have found to preserve flowers is with Silica Gel. You can find it at your local craft store. Its fairly simple and does a good job with most flowers. Its a powder that removes the moisture from the flowers. There is even a type that you can microwave to make the drying process faster.

Another way of preserving your flowers involves a process called freeze drying. It uses an advanced equipment with advanced technology. First, you place your flowers in the machine.

Then, moisture is removed gradually up to 4 weeks. All this is done under sealed vacuum condition. This makes sure no oxygen is present. Oxygen can cause oxidation and change the colours of the flowers.

Article by Sada Lily

We may be going over some of the more common, and favored flowers that are found out there.

We will start out with the carnations. The carnations have several different color varieties so we are going to go over the basic couple starting with the general meaning of the carnation. The carnation stands for the love of a girl and your love. It also incorporates fascination.

If you were to get a pink carnation that would suggest the person that sent you that carnation will never forget you. You will always be in their head even if you’re not there. If you were to receive the red carnation that fundamentally suggests that somebody misses you a lot. It implies that you are in their heart. It is also used for admiration. A white carnation fundamentally implies pure or true love, a person’s innocence. A striped carnation may be employed to convey that you cannot be with an individual. A yellow carnation is an indication of refusal.

Next we’re going to move onto the Chrysanthemum. The chrysanthemum generally implies that somebody is a fabulous buddy, rest, and even cheerfulness. The chrysanthemum also comes in different kinds in which we’re going to cover. The white chrysanthemum implies the truth, and the yellow means slighted love.

The daffodil stands for unrequited love, and it suggests that you are the only 1 for me. The daisy’s meaning is innocence, loyal love, purity, and the saying I may Never Tell. Lavender stands for Admiration, and solitude. The ambrosia flower is used to convey reciprocal love.

The Forget Me Not, which many of us are sure to know about, has the meaning of true love, and memories.

The white lily means virginity, purity, and majesty. The yellow lily means that you are walking on air, and the calla lily stand for beauty. The tiger lily, which is unique in and of it, stands for wealth and pride. The day lily is the Chinese emblem for mummy, and the Lily of the Valley basically stands for sweetness, humility, return to contentment, and that You’ve Made My Life Complete.

The bridal rose means love, naturally. The dark crimson rose stands for mourning, and the hibiscus rose stands for fragile beauty. The pink rose stands for perfect contentment, and the red rose stands for love and I adore you. The white rose stands for innocence and purity.

The sweet pea stands for good bye, and departure. The iris is a flower which represents faith, courage, and wisdom. It’s also used to convey the significance of a comradeship. The yarrow flower is used to convey healing, and aloe is used as a symbol of integrity and wisdom. The orchid stands for beauty, refinement, love, and lovely lady.

Now you know a touch more about some of the meanings to a couple of flowers that are commonly found in the florists today you will be in a position to realize what flowers should go in a certain bouquets, and if you receive a bouquet, what it implies. Keep in mind that no all folks will communicate in flower choices; they may have different cultural understanding per the meaning of flowers, or didn’t consider the flower meaning and simply chose them due to the design. However, some florists do keep these meanings in mind when coming up with a vase or bouquet.
.

Ever wondered why we give flowers as gifts? Or why different flowers symbolise different things? Well, the act of giving flowers dates back to prehistoric times and evidence of flowers having symbolic meanings can be found in Egyptian inscriptions and Chinese writings, as well a Greek and Roman Mythology. The fascinating history behind the language of flowers has developed over hundreds of years.

During the Middle Ages harsh restraints were placed on courtships and this led to the exchange of flowers to grow amongst couples, as the flowers they gave symbolised different messages, allowing couples to express themselves secretly without others seeing or hearing.
Flower meanings progressed through the 1600′s and became so refined that even military messages could be sent in a harmless gift of flowers. As time went on, the context in which flowers were given also began to have meaning. For example flowers handed over in the right hand would mean “yes” to a question, just as flowers handed over in the left hand would mean “no”.

By the Victorian era, great emphasis was placed on flowers and what they represented. Flowers were used to decorate almost everything from hair and clothing to jewellery and people’s homes. However, the same flower found in a different position could have a completely different meaning. For example wearing a Marigold in the hair expressed mental anguish, while the same flower pinned to the bosom conveyed indifference.Flowers had taken on so many different meanings and definitions that 1818 saw the very first flower dictionary published by Charlotte de la Tour call Le Language des Fleurs. The handbook was extremely popular and included over 1000 different meanings of flowers, plants and herbs.

By the 19th Century posies and bouquets carried so much meaning as each flower, colour and number held such symbolism. Giving a bouquet then was the equivalent of sending a text message on your mobile phone today!

Flowers and plants still carry different meanings and are used to represent and symbolise many things from cultures and nationalities to emotions and the marking of occasions. For example the red Rose has multiple meanings. It is one of England’s national emblems, found on England rugby shirts and sometimes on the England flag.

The story of the red Rose representing England dates back to the 15th Century when the War of the Roses took place from 1455-1487. The House of York adopted a white Rose, the House of Lancaster decided to take a red Rose. The winner of this war, Tudor Henry VII, merged his Lancastrian Rose with the red Rose of his York bride and therefore created the Tudor Rose, the Rose of England. The red Rose is also known worldwide as the symbol of love and romance and is traditionally sent on St. Valentine’s Day. The Language of Flowers is largely forgotten today and not as widely in bouquet choices as it once was. The tradition of communicating through flowers can add an element of fun to the flowers you buy as gifts – that is why we are bringing it back!

If you plan to walk down the aisle anytime soon, you should be aware that the flowers you carry might say more than you intended. That is right most flowers carry a meaning, or a special significance that has been passed down from generation to generation. We can trace this back to the Victorian Era. It was improper in those days for a man to come out and tell a lady how he felt, so he would choose a flower with special meaning and send it her instead. Because the meaning of flowers was so well known, the woman receiving them understood the message as clearly as if it was written on a piece of paper. As every flower lover knows, flowers have a language all their own. Every sentiment can be expressed with flowers. Wedding flowers are no different. For instance, you would not want to have yellow carnations at your wedding because yellow carnations mean disappointment and rejection. Make sure you know what the flowers mean before you use them as your wedding flowers. There is a reason that roses are the most popular choice of flowers for brides. A white rose stands for innocence, beauty and charm-just the traits every bride wants to portray. A bride that chooses red roses for her wedding flowers is sending a message of passion and of fiery love. If dark pink roses are used for a wedding, the couple is expressing a thankfulness that they found each other. An ivy coloured Rose stands for fidelity in the marriage-something every new couple strives for. Pink roses mean perfect happiness but yellow roses mean jealousy. Sometimes, it is not the colour that holds the meaning but the type. A tea rose means I will always remember you but a dried white rose means I would rather die than lose my virtue. Rosebuds means beauty and youth but roses signify secrecy and silence. Roses are not the only flowers that hold meaning. Lilies are a very popular wedding flower. The most popular type of lily is the Calla Lily, which means beauty. Most lilies have beautiful meanings. The white lily means it is heavenly to be with you while the yellow lily means I am walking on air. Did you know that the day lily is the Chinese symbol for Mother. The tiger lily means wealth and pride. Not all flowers have negative meanings, there are very few negative meanings for tulips. Tulips in general mean the perfect lover, this might be a good one to tuck into the buttonhole on his tux. Red tulips are a declaration of love while a yellow tulip means there is sunshine in your smile. If you are having a spring wedding, there is simply no better way to express your love for your future spouse than by carrying a bouquet of tulips. They are not only beautiful, but speak of an undying love. There are some flowers you can just look at and assume you know what they mean. Never be too hasty in assuming anything. For instance, when you look at a cactus you would think that there had to be a negative meaning for it – wrong. A cactus means endurance and forever. This fits if you think about the cactus; they can survive anything. There are so many different types of wedding flowers that no one could name them all but here are a few more. Peonies mean shame. Orchids are the Chinese symbol for many children. Ferns and Petals is an online gifts and florist shop. No matter what wedding flowers you pick, no one is really going to know the meaning unless you tell them. Your wedding flowers, like your wedding, should be memorable and not based on superstition. Finding the meanings of flowers is like being superstitious about the groom seeing the bride in her wedding dress before the wedding. We make our own luck. Ferns and Petals is an online florist shop. As you can see, the flowers that you choose for your wedding will definitely set the mood. Knowing that, before you select your flowers, determine what type of wedding and reception event you want to have. Once you do that, choosing the flowers will be a breeze

Article by Patricia Pirkis

Many brides want to incorporate a bolder color like red into their bridal party, but when it comes time to select a brilliant red flower girl dress they might second guess such a choice. After all, many women wonder, is red really acceptable for a child? Actually, it is more and more common to see a scarlet red flower girl dress which coordinates with the male or female elements of the overall bridal party.

For example, there are fairy tale-like dresses using tons of tulle and velour along with silk flowers and sashes to create extremely youthful and whimsical dresses, but there are also options for a red flower girl dress that rely on varying shades of that hue too. This might mean a rose plaid tartan dress or a bolder fuchsia dress instead of a deep red dress instead. All such styles might match groomsmen’s cummerbunds or bridesmaids gowns.

It is important to also remember that a red flower girl dress is not going to be cut or styled in the same manner as an adult gown. This usually implies that concerns about putting a child in a dress that is too ‘grown up’ in its appearance is never a problem. If the bride is still worried about such a strong color on a younger person, they might also opt for bold accents of red instead. For example, there are many styles of white dresses that can have sashes, hemlines, and all kinds of flowers or embroidery in a shade of red that coordinates completely with the remainder of the bridal party too.

If the flower girl is dressed in red, the effect of this color might also be reduced by the addition of silk flowers in a lighter shade, or by the selection of a style that has a youthful feature. For instance, a satin dress with a thick waistline of rosette flowers will easily downplay the potency of any shade or hue of true red.

Another thing to remember when opting for red in a bridal party is that many serious stains or marks are easily hidden by this shade. For instance, the younger flower girl who is prone to roughhousing or active play might be able to engage in her traditional behaviors without worrying about staining the dress with the slightest amount of activity. This is something that is a common issue with toddlers as well, and selecting a dress in something as ‘forgiving’ as a deeper red might be a good all-around solution.

Article by Jay Stockman

The fascination with flowers have captivated, and charmed people world wide. They represent a form of life that has endured evolution, and continues to flourish. With a diversity of colors, forms, scents, and uses, flowers have been revered by generations of admirers, and enthusiasts alike. Throughout history flowers have been the perfect form of expression, when words were hard to find. The language of flowers is a language of love, endearment, and respect. The truly popularity of flowers lies in their ability to bring joy, and good cheer.

The first flowering plants found were tiny herb-like flower fossils dating back 120 million years. An innumerable number of images of preserved flowers and flower parts have been found in fossils located all over the world. According to scientists, there are over 270,000 species of flowers that have been documented and are living in the twenty-first century. Scientists continue to marvel over the amazing diversity of species, and the species that have not changed much during evolution. Many flowers have coevolved with their pollination animals.

The flower is the reproductive organ of a plant. It is the job of the flower to produce seeds through fertilization, and pollination. Pollination requires animals (bees, hummingbirds, etc.), wind, or water to transfer male pollen to the female ovule. After a flower is fertilized, it develops into a fruit containing seeds. These seeds are the next generation, and serve as the means by which species of plants are dispersed across a field. Cross breeding can occur, and this leads to the enormous diversities seen.

The alluring nature of flowers has made them subjects of folklore, and poetry. Their medicinal use has been embraced by the east for centuries. A flower’s fragrance is its personality, a beautiful bouquet of scents that permeate even the worst form of pollution. Flowers have been associated with religious symbolism, the lily signifying purity for example. The diversity of shapes and colors makes them the perfect decoration, and the perfect gift. The likelihood of two people having the same color, shape arrangement is very remote. Edible flowers have been used in the culinary field for flavor and garnish for many years.

It is clear that flowers do have a very endearing language. A language that is universal, without borders. A language that contains no negativity, nor prejudice. An unconditional way of expressing a feeling so deep, that words could never convey the true meaning. Regardless of the situation, the sight of a flower will always solicit a smile, and a sense of warmth.
